This course forms the core of medical research. The course aims to expose the student to the process of scientific writing, both quantitative and qualitative. This will be achieved by building an understanding of the elements of the research process, equipping the students with developing a research problem as well as appraising relevant literature and data collection and interpretation. The overall outcome is to produce and present a comprehensive research proposal.

Course Introduction
Welcome to the e-learning course,Research Methodology (RML921S). We hope that you will find studying RML921S via e-learning both enriching, enlightening, and exhilarating. RML921S aims to expose postgraduate students to the various advanced research methodologies, theories, designs, tools, principles and procedures so that they can write a comprehensive research proposal, review related literature, develop research tools, collect and analyse data, and present findings.
The major aim of the course is to expose postgraduate students to the various advanced research methodologies, theories, designs, tools, principles, and procedures so that they can write a comprehensive research proposal, review related literature, develop research tools, collect, and analyse data, and present findings. It also relates to the considerations that go into selecting research approaches that include amongst others, qualitative approach, quantitative approach, or mixed methods method approach. The philosophical worldviews, research designs, reviewing the literature, understanding the use of theory, anticipating ethical issues, and developing writing strategies will be covered in this course. We will discuss the process of research as it relates to each research approach. The process includes originating a researchable research topic; developing a research problem; writing an introduction, specifying a purpose statement, and developing research objectives; questions, and/or hypotheses. The course will also discuss the research methods and procedures for quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods studies. In addition, data analysis techniques, which include descriptive, inferential statistics, and qualitative will be explored. Ethical considerations will remain indispensable in this course.

This course aims to expose students to research paradigms and approaches related to new technological developments and emerging trends in the field of Data Science. It seeks to instill a critical analysis of innovative products and research contributions in the field in order to formulate research questions, plan to execute a scientific or technical research project, focusing on applied research Data Science areas of her/his own interest. Through discussions during the seminar series, it will sharpen students’ conceptual, design, writing and communication skills to develop and present a comprehensive individual research project proposal in a specific application domain of the field of study.
