ANH620S is an introductory course for undergraduate students that will be active in the agriculture sector, aimed principally (but not exclusively) at people with an interest in, and knowledge of food animal production. Elements of physiology, anatomy, epidemiology, microbiology, production management and animal welfare are integrated into a health management approach emphasizing disease prevention.
We will cover causes and determinants of diseases, how to identify sick animals, how diseases are transmitted and spread, the characteristics of specific diseases, how to investigate diseases, how to treat them and, perhaps most importantly, when to escalate the problem to a veterinarian. Along the way and where possible, you will also gain practical experience in handling and treating sick animals and direct control measures for disease prevention and outbreak situations.
The course enables students to have a better judgment over the protection and management of the animal and its environment in order to minimise disease outbreaks and injuries. It also sensitises students to carefully plan all the different inputs, actions and responsibilities related to animal health.
